By: Maria Frye, RDN
In this episode of Ask a Nutritionist, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Maria Frye explains the benefits of buying fruits and vegetables in season by answering the questions, "Why should I eat fruits and vegetables in season?" and "What types of produce are available each season?"
Maria explains how shopping for produce in the season they grow not only saves money, it also allows consumers to find the freshest, most flavorful fruits and vegetables available, which supports healthier eating patterns.
In addition, Maria provides examples of fresh produce you can expect to see in each season--such as leafy greens (spinach and collard greens) and strawberries during the spring, and avocados and berries during the summer--the nutrients they offer, and examples of how to use seasonal ingredients to make healthful meals.
